Leo XIV-appointed bishop wants women to preach at Mass. Bishop Beat Grögli of St. Gallen, Switzerland, has defended the practice of women delivering homilies at Mass, although canon law defines the homily as an inherent part of the liturgy. Kath.ch reported on October 8 that Bishop Grögli told a group of women that this prohibited practice had existed in his diocese for nearly 50 years. He suggested that reversing the practice would be incomprehensible. Grögli described the theological arguments against women preaching as “weak,” adding: “Honestly, I have never understood them.” He considers “the female perspective in preaching an enrichment.” Asked whether his position constituted disobedience, he pointed to ongoing discussions with Rome. He said he spoke to the Pope before he went into the surgery but hasn’t spoken to him directly following the news of his diagnosis: “It was quite a shock especially from my younger brother, my youngest brother because I’m undergoing cancer treatment myself..to hear that he had that nodule on his lung it was kind of nerve-wracking, shaky…but speaking to him, you know that’s when he told me..well I said, was it life-threatening, 'no', does it seem serious, 'no, they think it's early enough it's small it should be relatively easy surgery'…so we were all in high-hopes and high spirits hoping for the best.
