"Preserving the Liturgy Is Part of Preserving the Faith" – Bishop Schneider
He is currently celebrating Mass and delivering talks in various locations across Ireland, including Cobh, Leixlip, Monaghan and Ardee. Previously, he was in Africa. In July, he led the golden jubilee celebrations of the Congregation of the Mothers and Missionaries of the Holy Cross in Puma, Tanzania.
Interfering with the Liturgy Destroys Religion
In Sunday's homily, Bishop Schneider recalled that "history has proved a thousand times that there is nothing more dangerous for a religion - nothing more likely to result in discontent, unrest, division, and apostasy - than interference with the liturgy and, consequently, with religious sensibility."
He recalled the apostolic rule: "Antiquity was retained. Novelty was rejected." Quoting Dom Prosper Guéranger, he added: "Every heretic or sectarian who wishes to introduce a new doctrine finds himself unfailingly face to face with the traditional liturgy."
Bishop Schneider also appeared to respond to Pope Francis' oft-repeated statement that "the Church is no museum". He said that those who make such claims "show their blindness to the great role played by adequate and beautiful expression."
