Bishop Corrado Sanguineti of Pavia is the frontrunner to become the next Archpriest of St Peter’s Basilica - succeeding Cardinal Mauro Gambetti. Writing for IlGiornale.it, Nico Spuntoni says Bishop Sanguineti is now in “pole position” for the post following Gambetti’s departure. Other names floated in recent weeks include former papal master of ceremonies Archbishop Guido Marini, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Archpriest of the Basilica of St Mary Major. Leo XIV knew Sanguineti before his election to the papacy through Pavia, home to the tomb of St Augustine. The two celebrated a Eucharist together there in February 2024. Sanguineti was also received by Leo XIV in a private audience at the Vatican in early September.
