Pope Leo XIV sent a written message to the Italian anti-Church newspaper La Repubblica to mark its 50th anniversary. It was founded by the atheist Eugenio Scalfari (1924–2022) and was Pope Francis’ house paper. Historically La Repubblica was one of Italy’s largest daily newspapers, with peak print circulation in the late 1990s and 2000s, average daily sales of about 500,000 copies. Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś said that the Polish wording of the Good Friday prayer for Jews had been changed 2022 because the previous text was 'so dramatically untrue'.
