Leo XIV will not celebrate the closing Mass of the meeting marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris laetitia.
Pope Leo XIV will not preside over Wednesday’s closing Mass marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris laetitia, scheduled for October 14 in St. Peter’s Square.
He will also miss Tuesday’s inaugural Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal ceremony at Borgo Laudato Si’ in the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo, where Cardinal Michael Czerny will receive the award.
Leo XIV is preparing for surgery to remove a lung nodule, the Vatican announced Monday.
He is expected to enter Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday. He is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the nodule was detected during a routine examination, not following symptoms of an acute illness. Its nature, whether benign or malignant, remains undisclosed.
Medical guidelines generally recommend monitoring rather than surgically removing incidental solid lung nodules smaller than 6 mm.
