Cardinal Burke Celebrated traditional Mass in Amsterdam
Hundreds of Catholics attended and then processed through the Dutch capital to pray the Rosary publicly in Vondelpark.
Cardinal Willem Eijk of Utrecht and Bishop Jan Hendriks of Haarlem-Amsterdam were also present.
Floris van Rijn, 23, told Nd.nl that he had never previously experienced the traditional liturgy, “It took some getting used to, but it was beautiful,” he said.
Van Rijn described Cardinal Burke’s presence and the opportunity to attend the Mass as “a unique chance.”
In Vondelpark, hundreds gathered around the statue of the Blessed Virgin carried in the procession. Priests wearing purple stoles heard confessions outdoors while the Rosary was recited in multiple languages.
The prayers could be heard in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Polish, Slovak, Latin and Dutch.
Cardinal Burke then addressed those gathered on the spiritual meaning of the Rosary.
The repetition involved in the prayer is not monotonous, Burke said, but rather “the repeated expression of profound love”: “We never tire of the words. We never tire of repeating them.”
