Catholic Marriages in the USA Have Declined by 60% Since 2000

Catholic marriages dropped from approximately 267,000 in 2000 to 111,718 in 2024 — a decline of almost 60%, according to data reported by EWTN News on 31 January from the Official Catholic Directory.
Compared with 1970, when there were around 426,000 Catholic weddings, today's figures show a decline of around 75%, despite the growth in the Catholic population.
This phenomenon has been evident for decades. A similar headline was published in June 2011 when a study by Our Sunday Visitor found that the number of weddings celebrated in American Catholic churches had dropped by 60%. At that time, there was 'a shift from 8.6 marriages per 1,000 US Catholics in 1972 to 2.6 marriages per 1,000 Catholics in 2010'.

English Lit Students Can’t Read Novels, Film Students Can’t Watch Movies: Believe it or not, movies are joining novels as a niche art – Allah's Willing Executioners

You may remember the stories about how college students, even English Lit ones, had lost the ability to read novels.
Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities, Columbia University’s required great-books course, since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become overwhelmed by the reading. College kids have never read everything they’re assigned, of course, but this feels different. Dames’s students now seem bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. His colleagues have noticed the same problem. Many students no longer arrive at college—even at highly selective, elite colleges—prepared to read books.
This development puzzled Dames until one day during the fall 2022 semester, when a first-year student came to his office hours to share how challenging she had found the early assignments. Lit Hum often requires students to read a book, sometimes a very long and dense one, in just a week or two. But the student told …

How John D. Rockefeller Used the AMA to Take Over Western Medicine
by Makia Freeman

The Flexner Report was a very useful tool commissioned by oli magnate John D. Rockefeller.
Rockefeller had made a massive fortune with Standard Oil, and he was setting his sights on
gaining a monopoly in the drug and pharmaceutical industry.
However, first he had to get rid of the competition, which consisted of natural non-allopathic healing modalities – naturopathy, homeopathy, eclectic medicine (botanical and herbal medicine), holistic medicine, etc.

The Beatitudes explained to a child

Dear child, let's sit together like Jesus' friends did on that sunny mountain. Jesus saw all the people and climbed up high, sat down, and taught his disciples (that's his closest followers) some super special secrets to true happiness. These are called the Beatitudes—like God's promises of joy for those who love Him His way. They're not about toys or candy, but about hearts full of goodness that lead to heaven!
Jesus' Happy Promises (The Beatitudes)
Jesus said:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
This means happy are people who aren't proud or full of themselves—they know they need God like a little bird needs its mommy. They're humble inside, so God gives them His kingdom, a forever home in heaven!
"Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land."
Happy are the gentle ones who don't get mad or bossy, like a kind puppy who waits patiently. They control their tempers and trust God, so one day they'll have the best "land"—God's wonderful world …More

"Josete" Has Finally Been Replaced - But Only After Public Homosexual Scandal

The Instituto Teológico a Distancia (ITD) has a new director following José ("Josete") Castro Cea's departure. On 30 January, ElConfidencialDigital.com reported that Cardinal José Cobo, the pro-homosexual Archbishop of Madrid, had appointed José Ángel Agejas Esteban, a layman, to the post.
Josete was removed as director of the Institute and dismissed as parish priest of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Madrid. Infovaticana.com had published in September 2025 a video of him performing in a comedy show bragging about his homosex concubine.
The new director is not a theologian, but a professor of ethics and deontology at the Faculty of Communication of the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria.
The Archdiocese of Madrid has neither confirmed nor denied whether a canonical investigation against Josete is underway. Considered a close friend of Cardinal Cobo, Josete currently has no pastoral assignment. In December, he completed a course in artificial intelligence for business at the …More

Smugglers of the faith: How Filipino workers became missionaries through migration

Across continents, Filipino Catholics have emerged as what Pope Francis once memorably called “smugglers of the faith”: believers who carry the Gospel not by argument but through presence, perseverance, and hope.
During the first-ever Simbang Gabi — a nine-day series of devotional Masses celebrated by Filipino Catholics from Dec. 16–24, leading up to Christmas — celebrated by a pope at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis said in 2019: “I have often said that here in Rome Filipino women are ‘smugglers’ of faith! Because wherever they go to work, they sow the faith.”
Never before were those words more visible than in the experience of millions of Filipinos living and working abroad. What began as labor migration has become an unplanned but unmistakable form of evangelization — carried by ordinary Catholic families whose faith is lived openly, communally, and joyfully.
Faith carried in daily life
For many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), migration was never intended as a mission. It …

Another Belgian Priest Mourned by Concubine — Is Celibacy Still in Force?

The late Belgian Catholic priest Abbé Maurice Léonard, who was publicly mourned by his female “companion” and his “children of the heart,” was not an isolated case.
RiposteCatholique.fr has published on January 29 another obituary that renews questions about clerical celibacy in Belgium.
Abbé Marc Otjacques, a longtime priest in the Andenne region, died on September 4, 2025 at age 73 in a bicycle accident while returning from presiding over a Eucharist.
The official diocesan obituary praised his decades-long commitment to the poor and made no mention of a concubine.
According to a separate family-published notice, the priest was mourned by Madeleine Dorjoux, identified as his companion; Caroline and Ludovic Trufin-Struvay, described as his “daughter of the heart” and son-in-law; and Laure-Anne and Romain, his beloved grandchildren.

Sunday of the Beatitudes

Today is the Sunday of the Beatitudes. We post the reflection of the day from the Magnificat by Father Jacques Philippe. He's a Member of the Community of the Beatitudes and a great spiritual director. It's titled, "A Portrait of Christ and His Disciple."
The Beatitudes, one might say, are not only the most profound revelation of the mystery of God but also a complete treatise on spiritual life. They show what we are called to be as Christians, what it really means to live the Gospel. They describe true human and spiritual maturity. A portrait of Christ, they are also the portrait of the mature Christian in Christ, a son or daughter of the Father who is free in the Spirit. They sum up the most perfect realization of human existence. A pathway to humanization, they are also a way of fruitfulness, showing us how to bear fruit that lasts, how to spread love and inspire others to true life….
The Gospel isn’t a legal code superimposed on life (and perhaps making it more difficult or …

German Synod Approves Oversight Mechanism for Bishops — Even Marx Opposed It

At the close of its sixth assembly in Stuttgart on Saturday, the German Synodal Assembly narrowly approved, by the required two-thirds majority, a resolution authorizing the creation of a national Synodal Conference planned for the autumn.
The central dispute concerned whether the new body should "monitor" the implementation of synodal resolutions in the dioceses.
Even Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich warned against creating a superior authority that would supervise bishops or interfere in diocesan governance. “I do not want that,” Marx said.
Similarly, Bishop Peter Kohlgraf of Mainz said that a control body overseeing bishops would contradict Catholic principles.
Bishop Josef Overbeck of Essen expressed confidence. The Vatican has been informed about the planned body and he expects approval in the coming weeks.
Asked about a possible rejection from Rome, Bishop Georg Bätzing of Limburg said he had no indication that approval was in doubt and ruled out proceeding without Vatican consent …More

French Senate rejects assisted dying, adopts palliative care

On January 28, the French Senate rejected the assisted dying bill, which will return to the National Assembly, and adopted a law promoting palliative care.
After more than a year of debates, multiple consultations, and delays due to political uncertainties, the
French Senate rejected the proposed law on assisted dying. The bill will ultimately be sent back to the National Assembly. Senators rejected the text by 181 votes to 122. Immediately afterwards, the Senate voted 307 to 17 in favor of the bill on palliative care.
The bill on the “right to assisted dying,” as drafted by the National Assembly, would have allowed adults of "sound mind" to resort to medical assistance in dying under certain circumstances: they would have to be suffering from a serious and incurable condition that is life-threatening in the short or medium term, and experiencing physical or psychological pain that is considered very resistant to treatment.
This assistance would have taken two forms: self-…

“While some had hoped Leo's move to the Apostolic Palace signaled a return to tradition, his decision to take up what were the guest quarters above the papal apartment suggest a more nuanced message from Leo: a nod to pre-Francis era papal customs, imbued with the freedom his predecessor carved out to break from the norm.”

Pope Leo to move into converted suite in Apostolic Palace

Vatican City — January 30, 2026
Nearly nine months after his election, Pope Leo XIV is finally moving home. But, perhaps taking a page from his predecessor, he will not reside in the traditional papal apartment that has housed most modern popes since 1870.
Instead,
according to the Italian daily La Repubblica, Leo will live in a newly prepared suite above the papal apartment, created from former staff and guest quarters and set to include a small chapel and a workout area.
Described as an "attic" above the Terza Loggia, the top floor of the Apostolic Palace where the papal apartments are located, the pope's quarters will also include a bedroom, a detached bathroom, kitchen and a small terrace.
The pope's brother, John Prevost, told the National Catholic Reporter in October that Leo was having gym equipment installed in his living space and that he often prepares his own dinner, hence the need for a kitchen.
The apartment will be decorated modestly, primarily in white and with basic …

The Department of Justice on Friday released the largest batch of Jeffrey Epstein files to date, a giant tranche including three million more pages of documents and thousands of videos and images.
The documents shed new light on the disgraced financier’s relationships with several prominent figures, including Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. They also contain a
significant number of uncorroborated tips to law enforcement.
Congress mandated the release in November, and President Trump signed the bill despite initially opposing it, as he has sought to put an end to the accusations and speculation swirling around the case. The latest batch of documents arrived weeks after a Dec. 19 deadline imposed by Congress.
